Background

The Department of Health is conducting a territory-wide survey that aims to assess the ability of the Hong Kong population in accessing, understanding, appraising and applying health information pertaining to prevention of non-communicable diseases (e.g. hypertension, diabetes and cancer). Collected information will be useful to the Government for developing a health literacy measurement instrument as well as formulating actions or programmes for prevention of non-communicable diseases. The fieldwork will commence in January 2023 and is expected to last for 5 months.

Target population

Hong Kong land-based non-institutional population aged between 18 and 64.

Contents of the Survey

DH has commissioned MOV Data Collection Centre Limited to conduct household interview for the Health Literacy Survey on Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases. A sample of quarters is selected by DH using a scientific method. Invitation letters will be sent to the selected quarters by post before the household visits, or brought by the interviewers during the visit. Each Interviewer will carry an Interviewer Identity Card issued by MOV Data Collection Centre Limited and DH for identification purpose.

The interviewers will use a structured questionnaire and conduct individual face-to-face interviews in Chinese (Cantonese or Putonghua) with all eligible members aged between 18 and 64 in the households. Moreover, some respondents will be invited to participate in a shorter interview about 2 weeks later.

All interviewers are vaccinated against COVID-19 and will adopt precautionary infection control measures when conducting interviews.

Handling of data collected

All data collected will only be used for research and statistical purposes. Survey results will only be released in aggregated form. Personal information for identification of an individual shall only be collected for the purposes of quality control or follow-up check. All personal data and contact information collected will be kept strictly confidential and destroyed within 6 months after completion of the survey.

If your family is invited to take part in the Health Literacy Survey on Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases, please give us your generous support. As a token of appreciation, DH will provide cash coupon to each eligible household member upon completion of the interview.
