Question

I consider having an operation for the dilated blood vessels in my scrotum. I have the following questions:

  1. 1) Is this operation dangerous?
  2. 2) How long do I have to take rest after the operation?
  3. 3) What food or tonic can I take to get well faster

Thanks a lot for your help

Answer

From what you described in your message, you are referring to the operation for variocele in the scrotum. Varioceles are dilated veins in the spermatic cord, and these abnormal veins are tied in the operation without affecting other blood vessels and the sperm duct. This is a relatively minor surgery which can be done under local or general anaesthesia. Patients generally can resume normal life after 1 to 2 days if there is no post-operative complication. Therefore, you do not need to be too worried. You can try fluid and then normal diet slowly after the operation, and a balanced diet is the key to faster recovery. Concerning exercise, you can try light physical activities like walking at first, and avoid lifting heavy weights in the first 2 weeks.

If you have any questions about this operation, you should ask your doctor to clarify before the operation.
