Question
My 30-year-old wife was confirmed to be a hepatitis B carrier a few months ago. I am 38 years old, and I don't have any liver disease in the past. I don't know whether I am also a hepatitis B carrier. What should I do?

Answer

About one tenth of people in Hong Kong are hepatitis B carriers. It is a very common condition. Hepatitis B can be transmitted through sexual contact. Therefore, if you are unsure of your hepatitis B status, you should ask your doctor for a blood test. If the test shows that you are not infected and you are not immune to hepatitis B, you are a candidate for hepatitis B vaccination. If you already have immunity against the disease, then you do not need the vaccine. However, if the test shows that you are a carrier, you should pay more attention to taking care of your liver. Reduction or abstinence from alcohol intake, maintenance of a balanced diet and avoidance of unnecessary medications and street drugs can all help. For more information, please go to Cirrhosis.
