There are a number of reasons for the deepening of urine colour (i.e. turning "more yellow"). The most common reason is that you drink not enough water. If you find that the urine colour turns lighter after you replenish water, there should be no problem. However, some diseases give rise to urine in dark colour (e.g. tea colour). They include liver diseases (e.g. hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver failure) and diseases affecting the blood (e.g. malaria, hemolytic diseases).
It is understandable that you worry about liver problem since you have family history of liver cancer. Since hepatitis B carriers are common in Hong Kong and this may lead to liver cancer, you should ask your doctor to check your status if you haven't done yet. If you are a carrier, your doctor will propose a schedule to monitor your liver functions from time to time. If you are not a carrier and do not have antibody against hepatitis B, you can consider taking the vaccine. Besides, adopting a healthy lifestyle, reduction or abstinence from alcohol, practice of safer sex, avoidance of drug abuse and attention to food hygiene can all help protect your liver.
