Question
Can gout be completely cured? What is its treatment? What else should I pay attention to?

Answer
Gouty arthritis is due to the deposition of urate crystal in the joints that leads to inflammation, swelling and pain. The joints may be deformed in more severe disease, and urate crystal may also deposit in other body areas such as pinna of ear and subcutaneous tissue. There are three treatment areas for gout. Firstly, you should pay more attention to your diet, and avoid food that will increase the blood urate level, such as offal, yellow bean, marine products and wine. Secondly, at times of acute attack, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or Colchicine can be used to reduce inflammation. Thirdly, for patients with recurrent attacks and high blood urate level, xanthine oxidase inhibitor (such as Allopurinol) or drugs that enhance urate excretion (such as Probenecid) can be used in between acute attacks to reduce or avoid recurrence. Besides, weight reduction can also help.
