Question

I am 41 years old and was diagnosed to have hypertension eight months ago. I did some other investigations like X-ray and urine tests and they were all normal. My doctor said it might be hereditary, and I was prescribed with some drugs. Before taking the drugs, my blood pressure was 190/110. After taking the drugs, my blood pressure was still high at 170/100 when it was taken at my doctor's office. But my blood pressure was lower at 120/80 or 140/85 at home. I am worried about this. Can you tell me why? Thanks.

Most of the people with hypertension do not have obvious secondary cause, and mostly are due to hereditary factors. If you have been diagnosed to have hypertension and are put on drug treatment, you should comply with the regimen and do regular follow-ups with your doctor. Many patients have higher blood pressure when they are in the doctor's office. This may be due to anxiety and stress. You can record the blood pressure readings at home and submit it to your doctor for reference.
