Question

I am 21 years old. I weigh 174 pounds and am 5'7" tall. Am I overweight? I do the following exercise: running for 40 minutes, "boat rowing" machine for 20 minutes and stepping machine for 45 minutes, with 15 minutes rest in between these exercises. Are they effective in helping me lose weight?

Answer

According to your weight and height, your body mass index (BMI) can be calculated:

174lbs=78kg, 5'7"=1.68m

BMI=Body weight / (Body height x Body height) = 78/(1.68x1.68) = 27.6

BMI at 27.6 means that you are overweight. Apart from regular exercise, you should also watch your diet, such as avoiding foods that are too sweet and fatty, and do not take in calories more than what you need. In your daily living, you should also be active whenever and wherever you can, such as walk more and use stair instead of lift. Before you engage in exercise, always do warm-up exercise to prepare your body. If you feel any discomfort or are tired, you should stop immediately. If the discomfort persists or worsens, you must consult a doctor immediately. Generally, appropriate amount of exercise will leave you feel your rates of breath and heart rate increase obviously and you are sweating moderately after exercise. If you are not used to exercise before, you must do it in a gradual way. Never exert your body too much.
