According to the Thematic Household Survey 2021, there are 9.5% of the Hong Kong population aged 15 or above who were daily smokers. This was lower comparing to previous years.
It is indisputable that smoking is hazardous to health. Smokers have higher risk of suffering from many chronic diseases like lung cancer, coronary heart disease, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema, etc. These diseases are commonly seen in middle-aged chronic smokers. In fact, smoking causes 5700 premature deaths in Hong Kong each year, and there are about 16 cases of death related to smoking each day, of which half are due to cancer. No smokers are exempted from the harmful effects.
