Diet and Diabetes

According to the Population Health Survey 2020-22 conducted by the Department of Health (DH), it was revealed that 54.6% of Hong Kong’s people aged 15 to 84 were overweight and obese, and over 90% of people aged 15 or above had inadequate daily intake of fruit and vegetables. Researches have proven that adequate intake of fruit and vegetables as part of a balanced diet can help prevent obesity and many non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Therefore, a healthy eating pattern is crucial for the prevention and management of diabetes. We should maintain a balanced diet by having at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day and choosing food items with less oil, less salt, less sugar and high dietary fibre. In addition, people with diabetes should establish a pattern of eating regular, small and frequent meals and have a moderate amount of carbohydrate intake, so as to stabilise the blood sugar level and attain balanced nutrition for better weight control and optimal health.
