Question
I saw my family doctor four months after a sexual contact (oral sex) and did an HIV test which turned out to be negative. I haven't had sex with anyone in these 4 months. Can I assume that I am free of HIV? Do I need another test?

Answer

When a person is infected with HIV, he/she will usually develop antibodies within three months and he/she will subsequently have positive result in HIV test. It is rare to have an antibody response six months or longer after the initial infection.

The most effective means to prevent HIV infection or AIDS are to have a one single sexual partner and to avoid sharing needles. Proper use of condom can also help. You can talk to your doctor or visit the AIDS section of this website for more information.
