Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most serious global health threats. When microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses evolve to become resistant to antimicrobials, infections become more difficult or even impossible to treat. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics are the main drivers of AMR.
The World Health Organization (WHO) organises the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) every year from 18 to 24 November. The theme for WAAW 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” In support of WHO’s call to action, the Infection Control Branch (ICB) of the Centre for Health Protection is set to launch a series of promotional activities.
Antimicrobial resistance is closely related to all of us. It is not a distant global issue, but a threat that can affect each of us. This year, the ICB has invited an AMR survivor to share his account of how antibiotic resistance nearly cost him his life, aiming to raise the public awareness of the antimicrobial resistance.
