Background:
With the development of the society, life expectancy of the Hong Kong population has been increasing. However, with aging population and changing health risk profile, more people are suffering from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, stroke and heart diseases. Unhealthy diet and insufficient physical activity are two of the major behavioral risk factors responsible NCDs. In order to improve the health of the population and reduce the burden from NCDs, the Department of Health (DH) has all along been working with various sectors to promote the culture of healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Programme Objectives:
In 2012, DH launched the “I’m So Smart” Community health promotion programme by adopting the core themes as “Healthy Diet” and “Regular Physical Activity” with the following objectives:
- To enhance community partnerships on health promotion and to work together in promoting healthy diet and regular physical activity
- To encourage community partners to make use of available local resources for health promotion activities and to devise policy conducive to building healthy environment.
Since the launch of the programme, the Department of Health has worked with relevant organisations to organise activities under various themes to jointly promote “Healthy diet and Regular physical activity”.

Community Partnerships:Urban health is influenced by a variety of social determinants, many of which extend beyond the scope of the health sector. Therefore, promoting health information through cross-sectoral collaboration not only avoid overlap in work but also strengthen cooperation and coordination among community partners. This can lead to cost-effective solutions, generating synergies between activities, and achieving benefits in resource sharing.
