World Antibiotic Awareness Week (14-20 November 2016)

Antibiotic Awareness Day 2016

Antibiotics: Handle with Care

The second World Antibiotic Awareness Week will take place from 14–20 November. It aims to increase awareness of global antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.

The theme of the campaign, Antibiotics: Handle with Care, reflects the overarching message that antibiotics are a precious resource and should be preserved. They should be used to treat bacterial infections, only when prescribed by a certified human or animal health professional. Antibiotics should never be shared or saved for the future

The Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance issued by World Health Organisation (WHO) underscores the need for “one health” approach in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This year, Hong Kong has established the multi-sectoral High-level Steering Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance to tackle the threat of antimicrobial resistance to public health.

To address the issue, actions taken by the healthcare sector alone are not enough and concerted efforts from different stakeholders including the general public are imperative to the success of control. This year, the “I pledge” campaign will extend its promotion on judicious use of antibiotics, among both healthcare workers and the general public. The “Use antibiotic wisely. Prevent antimicrobial resistance” video competition has been completed in August 2016, and selected videos will be awarded on 17 November.

Act now to preserve the power of antibiotics! Show your commitment and support on responsible use of antibiotics by signing the “I Pledge” certificate.
